TAYLOR G MCCONNACHIE
When I began my editing career in 2011, I opened Coma Edits to reflect my own editing
as a sole freelancer in Toronto's west end.
I figured adding a name to the company would be less lame than operating as a numbered company.
Quickly thereafter I was approached by more and more aspiring editors.
They wanted to understand how to get started, to shadow my work, and frankly
they simply wanted to have a comrade in the edit suite.
In the Film and Television industry globally there is door after door slammed shut on emerging creatives.
Knowledge is protected, opportunities are kept behind unnecessary gates, and ego reigns supreme.
This fucking sickens me.
I found myself cutting more and more identity pieces. Hoping to connect people
by portraying their stories authentically.
How could I do this work and not help those that were reaching out to me to do the very same?
I began mentoring in 2015 and since then have learned how to support folks more and more effectively.
I'm an editor first and foremost.
I also find time to help those around me to grow.
What I learn, I pass along.
I have built a roster of like-minded freelancers to round out a post team where my clients need it.
We operate as a boutique post house when it's helpful.
I've partnered, I've expanded, and then I've shrank back down
so I can do what counts. I started writing and producing, but most importantly, I cut.
I tell stories to help dissolve the divide between "us" and "them".
And along the way I extend my hand to anyone who needs it.
